June Book Club rescheduled to July 26th with author appearance!
After postponing our previously scheduled June 28th book club we are now announcing that we have rescheduled the June book club for Tuesday, July 26th. We will be having it at the earlier time of 1:00 pm (Central Time) in order to welcome our special guest, the author of the book we are discussing, Hugo Vickers. Mr. Vickers will be joining us via Zoom from England (where he is from) so we pushed up the time a bit to accommodate the time difference.
The book we are discussing is “Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece” by Hugo Vickers. We had originally planned to discuss this book in June, however it worked best for schedules to discuss it in July. As stated in an earlier blog post, Alice was the mother of Prince Philip (Queen Elizabeth’s husband). As we will learn from Mr. Vickers (and you can also read about in the book) Princess Alice was born deaf. Since we have been choosing both fiction and nonfiction books about hearing loss this book in part made the list because of Princess Alice’s deafness. As was mentioned earlier, Alice, the subject of this biography, was the mother of Prince Philip and her character is featured in an episode of Netflix’s show “The Crown.” If you have access to Netflix and are interested in checking out that episode, it is the following episode: Season 3, Episode 4, “Bubbikins.” You can read more about that episode here (author Hugo Vickers is referenced in this article).
As it states on his website “Hugo Vickers is a writer and broadcaster, who has written biographies of many twentieth century figures, including the Queen Mother, Gladys, Duchess of Marlborough, Cecil Beaton, Vivien Leigh, a study of Greta Garbo, Alice, Princess Andrew of Greece, and his book, The Private World of The Duke and Duchess of Windsor was illustrated with pictures from their own collection. Mr Vickers’s book, The Kiss – The Story of an Obsession won the 1996 Stern Silver Pen Award for Non-Fiction.”
As is the case with all HLAA-TC book clubs, this meeting is free and open to anyone. It will take place on Zoom and will have captions available. To request a link to this book club meeting please email HLAA-TC Social Media Specialist and book club coordinator Laura Hagemann at social@hlaatc.org
The HLAA-TC Book Club meets every month throughout the year on the fourth Tuesday of the month. We alternate between reading fiction and nonfiction books each month and our selections often deal with hearing loss, deafness or disability. We are meeting virtually on Zoom and have had several authors and special guests join us to discuss the books. We meet in the evenings (typically) on Zoom (with captions). For a schedule of upcoming books, please visit the Book Club Page on our website. All meetings are open to anyone (both HLAA members and non-members). If you would like to participate in future sessions and/or you have a book suggestion, please contact Laura Hagemann at social@hlaatc.org
Please join us on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at 1:00 pm (Central Time) for our discussion of “Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece” by Hugo Vickers with a discussion of the book with author Hugo Vickers.
